I belive if you had simply clicked on "sendmail" defaults would have
appiered. Most programs have defaults as you well know, so leaving them "as
is" is normally the best option.

The most likley reason is that you do not have automatic loading of kernel
modules turned on, either kmod is not in the kernel or your system does not
start kerneld ar bootime.

Have you tryed doing;
modprobe fat16
Then try and mount again,
Other options are fat and vfat or even 'msdos'.
