Hi,

if you want a real HW RAID controller you should use a Perc6 (with cache and
battery). SAS6/iR is sort of a SAS that can ‘talk’ RAID.

Of course Linux can handle SW RAID, but Perc Sx000 are ‘softwareBASED’ RAID
solutions.

That means in the RAID BIOS you can define what RAID levels shall be used, but
all the work is actually done by a OS driver (which is not available for
Linux).

A ‘real’ software RAID is configured and handled by OS alone. For Linux you can
use mdadm etc.

Cheers

Dear All,

Thanks for revert on this , if we want to get other SAS controller, which brand
and model that can recommended for Linux system. This time round we would like
some real HW RAID instead fake RAID.

I don't belive Linux does not supporrt software RAID, it should have it own
software driver from chipset manufacturer in this case it is LSI, do you think
this workable too

Hello,

What Jack said is true and confirmed on Dell’s Website ;

You should see S100-S300 spec :

Operating System Support

Windows Server 2003 32 bit SP2 and variants

Windows Server 2003 64 bit SP2 and variants

Windows Server 2008 32 bit and variants

Windows Server 2008 64 bit and variants

Windows Server 2008 64 bit R2 and variants

Not Supported:

Linux – All versions

Red Hat, Suse…

Virtualization O/S’s – All versions

Hyper-V, Citrix Zen, VMware…

Solaris – All versions

Client O/S’s (e.g. Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista, etc.)

You must have a SAS 6/iR.

Regards.

Yor probably referring to tech spec of R210. The server itself can run Linux OS
but you need to install RAID controllers other than any Sx00 Perc.

All S-series Percs are Windows-only + there are no Linux soltutions that I know
of.

Cheers.

But the spec in the link stated it support RHED and SLSE. I presume it should
work right.

Hi Jack,

the „S“ in controller name stand for „software“. So this device is for a more a
software driven RAID. The driver are only available for Windows.

Unfortunaly you will not be able to use Linux in this configuration.
