In the end I couldn't find a USC package, so I went with the Windows .exe one,
which seemed to be accepted by the iDRAC's web interface. Happily I've never
run another job on an iDRAC before, so the job queue was empty. Both R720xd
servers are now running 2.41.40.40 (rather than 1.57.x.x), which should be good
enough to accept all the other firmware updates I'm going to install via USB
stick (including the 2.41.41.41 update!).

Thanks everyone for your help.

The latest iDRAC7 Repair Package for 12th gen servers is here:
http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER01784797M/1/LC2.1_RTSPP_Repair_Package_1.3.0.850_A00.usc
 (taken from
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/7541.lifecycle-controller-2#lc2_fwmatrix
 although that page is outdated).
Good practice is to check the Job Queue in iDRAC first before updating the
iDRAC and see if anything is scheduled. If something is scheduled, let the job
execute and finish by rebooting the server and let it do it's thing (it will
auto-load the LC and apply any outstanding firmware updates for example). If it
shows completed job queues I made a habit of deleting the completed job from
the queue. After that you should be good to go to apply the latest iDRAC FW
which is 2.41.41.41

Excellent. I'll try that, thank you. What's on the page for R720xd servers
doesn't look that out of date (this month).

I hope that DRAC update trick works on Express as well as Enterprise level
iDRACs! Having trouble locating a repair package for the R720xd in a format
that the iDRAC will accept through the web GUI.
