This is a modem problem. It has nothing to do with PPP. Most Hayes
compatible modems use + + + to return to command mode. Here's an except
from a technical document I have in fron of me.

To return to command mode:

1. Send no characters to the modem for at least the duration specified in
register S12 (default is 1 second).

2. Type three pluses + (or the character specified in register S2) with a
duration of not more than the duration specified in register S12 between
each plus.

3. Wait for at least the durection specified in register S12 before typing
anything else.

It sounds like some modems are doing a crappy job of implementing this.
IMHO, characters received from another modem shouldn't count toward this
escape sequence -- only characters from your computer should count toward
this.

I haven't tryied this yet, I'm going to try setting S12 to the maximum value
(my doc says 5.1 sec!? :-o) and setting S2 to something uncommon like 255.
If that doesn't work I'll try escaping them in my ppp options file.
