Nothing in chat, but you can try configuring pppd for PAP authentication. 
Most ISPs do PAP and some do login/password too.  These ISPs look at
what's coming over the wire, and switch to PAP if there's no login name
entered, or perhaps looks for PPP-speak coming in and switch when it's
found.
