We have a few of each (Adaptec and Mylex) in production.

The Adaptecs seem to work.  The only PITA with them is the driver is not
part of the standard kernels, so for any kernel upgrade, you have to
either use Adaptec's binary driver or get their source and build it
yourself.  This also makes distribution upgrades a pain.  Either wait for
an Adaptec driver disk for the distribution, or build your own.
