Hello everyone,

I am running Caldera Open Linux e-Server 2.3 in a production environment, &
I am having trouble printing from network printers on a Jet-Direct box.
I've got 2 HP Laser Jets (one's a 4000N, the other a 4Plus) on one
Jet-Direct box, & 3 Okidata 390 printers on another Jet-Direct box.  I've
created the printers using both COAS and the Lisa utility. No matter how I
seem to edit the /etc/printcap entry, whenever I print to any of these
printers, it only prints the last page of the document. Below are the
entries from my /etc/printcap file. FR3 is the HP LaserJet 4000, FR5 is the
HP LaserJet 4Plus (both on the same Jet-Direct box), and FR1 is one of the
Okidatas on a different Jet-Direct box. I've edited these entries many
times, and the result is the same; I only get the last page to print out.
Also, whenever I send different jobs to the same printer, the first job will
print out twice, while the second job won't print at all. I have to stop &
start the LPD daemon several times between print jobs for the 2nd job to
print out. It seems as if the first print job is cached somewhere, so that
when you print the next job, it just reprints the first job from wherever
it's cached.

I've got a case open with Caldera tech support, but so far they haven't been
able to solve the problem. I can print to these printers without a problem
from my main Unix production server (System V - MP-RAS 3.02). As I've said
before, all I'm sending over is text. There's got to be a way for Linux to
handle this kind of problem, without resorting to 3rd party
applications/packages.

Any & all help is appreciated. I'm testing the feasibility of migrating our
main Unix server to Linux; we need to be able to print to these printers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It seems something is already listening on port 80. Try to
telnet to it "telnet localhost 80" and see what's listening
on it.

What a difference a distribution makes! The graphical installer on
Mandrake is a dream come true. It even had a robust probe to discover
and setup my oddball onboard vid for me. I boot into Gnome, and I can
mount and read my Windows files at once. It was so beautiful at first
boot that I almost cried. I still have a squinched looking display, but
am now much more confident I can solve that myself.

Netscape was right on the desktop where it belonged. All the menus are
easy to understand. This distro even has USB support. Maybe Linux is
ready for prime time after all!

Subject: New hard drive - copying /boot over

I'm replacing a small 1.2gb drive with a larger 10gb on a Mandrake 7.0
system. Question I have is this: The only thing on the 1.2gb drive is
the /boot partition (and a bogus /other directory). Can I just install
the 10gb temporarily as a 3rd ide drive, format and create file system,
and then just copy the /boot partition over? At shutdown, take the 1.2
out and just replace it with the 10gb? Is life that simple? After I get
the drive installed, I would like to move the /home and perhaps a few
other dir's over to the new space. Any precautions to keep in mind?
I've seen a written document covering this type of operation before but
for the life of me I can't seem to locate it now. Assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

Ciao!
Jeff

The online shopping explosion is happening globally. What is causing it? Everyone who
shops! Based on the US Census Bureau, in 1999, spending on goods and services grew to
2.9 trillion in the United States alone. Remember, your customers were among those
that contributed to this staggering number. With Bigsmart you can earn commissions
from your customers purchases, simply by redirecting their shopping dollar to your
Mall!

According to a report published by Ernst & Young in January 2000, the number of online
shoppers in America grew from 17 million in 1998 to 39 million in 1999. That means the
number of people shopping online in America more than doubled in just one year. This
incredible figure will continue to rise not only in America, but also globally. In
fact, Forrester Research predicts that by the year 2004, $7 trillion will be spent on
the Internet. Bigsmart can help you participate in this incredible online shopping
revolution.

Facts:

Every 1.67 seconds, a new user jumps on the Internet, adding 1.58 million new users

If it is not a winmodem, then you don't need a driver, as all modems
work the same (winmodems aren't modems).

twould be nice if there was an info file. So I grepped the whole Documentation

still capable of running 2.2.15 when I get done? Thats the lasty one I was

Subject: Mixed IDE/SCSI setup broke with new controller. Why?
Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 17:28:35 GMT

Hello:

Two hard drives, two OS's:
        Linux on SCSI /dev/sda
        M$ W------ 98 on IDE /dev/hda

I recently changed SCSI controllers:
        the old one was an ASUS SC-200 (Symbios 53C810A)
        the new one is a Mylex (BusLogic) BT-950

Previously, in order to install LILO on /dev/sda, I had to use
drive-swapping tricks in /etc/lilo.conf, making sure I had set `SCSI'
first in boot order in the motherboard BIOS:

============================================================
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=600
disk=/dev/sda
        bios=0x80
disk=/dev/hda
        bios=0x81

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16
        label=linux-2.2.16
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.16.img
        append="video=matrox:vesa:287"
        read-only
        root=/dev/sda1

other=/dev/hda1
        label=lose98
        table=/dev/hda
        map-drive=0x80
                to=0x81
        map-drive=0x81
                to=0x80
============================================================

This worked fine with the ASUS controller, but with my new Mylex
controller, it doesn't work anymore. LILO stops at `LI'. I can force
LILO onto /dev/sda if I disconnect the SCSI cable and run /sbin/lilo
with the following /etc/lilo.conf:

============================================================
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=600

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16
        label=linux-2.2.16
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.16.img
        append="video=matrox:vesa:287"
        read-only
        root=/dev/sda1
============================================================

Then I can reconnect the IDE cable and mount /dev/hda, but of course
can't boot into the OS located there. Moreover, if I re-run /sbin/lilo
with the IDE cable attached (using this second /etc/lilo.conf), then
lilo complains with

Warning: /dev/sda is not on the first disk

even though I've set `SCSI first' in the motherboard BIOS.
When I reboot, LILO again stops at `LI'.

A possible clue to my problem is the following message appearing in
/var/log/messages _every_ time I run /sbin/lilo:

Jul 3 09:30:00 dolphy kernel: scsi0: Warning: Partition Table appears
to have Geometry 67/62 which is not compatible with current BusLogic
Host Adapter Geometry 255/63

But if this geometry mismatch were truly significant, it seems I would
_never_ be able to boot from a LILO on /dev/sda. In fact, I _can_ under
the right circumstances. For what it's worth, the C/H/S specs printed
on the HD are 6536/4/161.

So, at the moment, I'm stuck with LILO on /dev/hda in order to boot into
both OS's, which I really don't want.

Can anybody help me move LILO to /dev/sda in a way that enables dual
booting?

Thanks in advance,

Hello all.

I am trying to install Rhat linux on a secondary 2gig partition on a

but after I select the type of installation it tells me that there is no

Hi, I am kind of new to linux, I unfortunately can't help you, but I was
wondering if you could help me with the printer setup, I don't what to change in
the etc/printcap, I'm connected to the server but I can't connect to the printer
itself, it's Xerox DC...., but I don't think it matters too much. So do you
setup new printers in the printcap or elsewhere as in /home/cshrc which was
mentionned to me??
I would be very greatful of any help, thanks a lot,

Sly.
