Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 12:49:19 +0000 (UTC)
Hi there,
I have a small laboratory whose weakest machine is a K6/200, with 64MB,
I'd like to use it as a terminal for use with the other workstations,
three 1Ghz AMDs with 256 MB.
All of them have Linux RH7.1, but it seems a bit too heavy for this
older one (the boot takes hours before anaconda is run.) Do you
agree? Any suggestion which older RH version? Should it have Freebsd
instead? (Or should I dispose of it?...)
Thanks
Pietro

Rubbish. You only need 64MB for /, anything more is dangerous! Have two
64MB / partitions for safety, one a cumulative mirror of the other, at
different ends of the disk(s). / really takes up about 28MB on most of
my distros. You can squeeze a rescue / into 4MB fairly easily, so seven
times that is great luxury.
I have a / of 128MB on my own machine, but that is because every time I
compile a kernel and its modules, bang goes another 7MB (from /lib/modules).
And I compile a lot of kernels ...

About 1m, 20cm, and use the colour blue.
What are you on about? Look up your vaio on the linux-laptops page!
(hint: googol). There you'll get info from other people with your
model.

No kernel patches have EVER been needed. What substance are you

Well go delete some files! And next time make a spearate partition for
/var, and link /tmp to /var/tmp. Do it NOW, while you remember.

Be advised that the person writing the article was very pro-XFS. Don't
base your decision on one article, I suggest reading some articles written
by ReiserFS and Ext3 supporters as well. Ext3 seems to be evolving and
who knows how it will end up exactly. ReiserFS is probably the most
widely used journalling file system on Linux. The quoted article here
did not address the limitations of the XFS Linux port. The numbers
for file size and file system size quoted there were for XFS on IRIX;
I don't believe you can get close to those numbers in the current Linux
port, perhaps a few terabytes (few being less than 100) at most, which
really isn't that limiting.
That said, I think the arguments for XFS are very compelling. On IRIX
it had some serious flaws in the early releases (IRIX 5.X): journalling
filesystems with no fsck utility should NOT EVER report to you "I am
corrupted". bleh! Under IRIX 6.X however, it worked fine - I have
colleagues who can attest that despite the fact the Power Challenge
10000 with 24 nodes panicked constantly, the file system was never
corrupted and recovered quickly. ;) The Origin 2000 seems to be
a much better machine, in all fairness.

Ahmm, you *did* run lilo after updating lilo.conf, didn't you? Otherwise
it's no wonder that your computer won't boot - only modifying lilo.conf
without actually running lilo isn't at all useful.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't been able to find a memory test (mem86 does
not seem to be implemented on my system). However, I doubt if any memory
fault would not be detected during the boot process... My system is on a dual
boot, and it seems to work OK on Windows 98 (but, true enough, I spend as
least time as possible on Windows ! otherwise I might have noticed problems
there too). What I was wondering about, was that my problems might originate
from a local network to which I am connected... However, if I unplug the wire
to that network, nothing changes as far as frequent crashes... By the way, I
forgot to say that, about one every three times, I cannot even boot my system
! It crashes somewhere during the boot process (on various places, not
always the same), and then I have to disconnect the machine and try again.
Some other times, the system seems to remain OK for 2 or 3 days in a roll...
Thanks in advance for more hints...

I looked at the source code, and it does indeed look like defrag
is always on now. Comparing 2.2.18 and 2.4 source I find that
references to the flag are gone, and the routine ip_defrag()
is always called where before it depended on the flag.

I finally went to the adaptec site and got the docs on the card, reset
it from 0x230 to 0x334, edited the source to restrict it to a MAXBOARDS
of 1 and gave it the 0x334 address as the choice.
Its working now, albeit rather slowly since its an ISA card. I had this
card in my home machine at one point, and with an older sheet metal
quantum 820 megger on it, could not get it above 900k/second, and
accessing it resulted in a severely lagged machine even though its dma
channel was registered into /proc/dma. A later advansys pci card gets a
couple of megs/second out of that drive, without the lags.
It looks as if its going to do that on this 8.2g drive too, as I have
about 3g in /usr and it only had 2 of it copied when I left for the
night. It had been working for over an hour on the copy then.
So I'll use it (and bitch about it) till I stumble across a good pci
card.
Cheers, Gene

Subject: /dev/dsp doesn't work, but everything else seems fine...
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 16:55:58 +0100
I have a strange problem with /dev/dsp. Running SUSE 7.1 with a Videologic
Sonicfury (TurtleBeach Santa Cruz). Sound apps work, i.e. mp3 players and
such although I'm not sure if the drivers are midi capable as yet. When I
cat a sample to /dev/dsp it will take the exact amount of time the sample
takes to play, but no sound will be produced. Quake 3 also uses /dev/dsp by
default, but fails on the sound initialization stage causing white noise to
be produced. The white noise can be cancelled by starting some other audio
app.
/dev/dsp is linked to dev/dsp0.
I've tried recreating the device with mknod, but it's still the same. I
have absolutely no idea what to try next, or whether this is a shortcoming
of the current driver set...
Ideas gratefully received!

I can start SUSE using the installation floopy, and I have to load every
time the module for my NIC, printing is out of the question as well.
Finally I was able to salvage my Mail and News-folders and other
documents but, it looks very likely that I don`t get the Caldera
eDesktop 2.4 back to a working order :-(
Anyway thanks again for taking the time :-)

whenever we make a change to the printer setup in the gui printtool the
changes are not taking effect. when we go back in everything changes back to
what it was.
thank you,
Kenny.
