Check out man fdisk and look for the MSDOS 6.x stuff. Maybe that
helps a bit.

too big ?

for example i compile a simple "Hello World" program statically and the

Possibly, if I knew what you wanted :)

Can you explain in more detail what you want?

What is "virtual mail"?

Using lizard, and after much trial, error, and testing, I managed to get it
to like 1280x1024 with 32 bits of color. This was not possible using any
other xconfig program. BTW, I'm running Caldera 2.4.

Ooops my mistake wrong command. I do it with a script that runs a couple
times a day.

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/last | /usr/bin/head -n 20 | (cat <<EOF
This is a list of the "user login's" on the system
hostname.domain.com, generated by cron.

The last 20 users to login on the system include:
EOF
cat
) | /bin/mail -s "Daily Last user login audit report" root

Name it.
Change the "hostname.domain.com" section to point to your system.

chmod 700 it.
then run it with cron.

Hope this helps

Subject: lilo to boot from SCSI drive?
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 00:08:01 -0700

Hi

I have two HDD,s , one on IDE interface as /dev/hda and second SCSI as
/dev/sdb. I installed Linux (Mandrake 7.1) with root on /dev/sdb2
(cylinders 639-654, well below 1024). However when I reboot LILO reports
a problem:
L 01 01 01 01 ... with streaming numbers.
According to documetation this represents a problem with BIOS which
cannot boot (more accurately: load second stage bootloader) off this
disk/partition (BIOS is reasonably new (1999), thats probably generic
BIOS problem).
Is there a way to circumwent it? I would really like to keep my boot
(and as much Linux partitions as possible) on SCSI. I would also like
not to use sdb1 as root as I need this for Windows (I do need it and I
expect problems if I use higher partitions for Windows. It usually only
works right when installed on first ones, otherwise starts compalining
and even proposing to format partitions it does not understand. This way
it does not see them at least).
BTW I can get to my Linux installation and do things manually. I just
want to figure out if it is possible to do anything about such
situation. Could upgrading to newver LILO help? I know it works with
more than 1024 cyl, but this is not an issue here.
Any help or thoughts please.
Thanks.

George

A coworker just gave me a very old Dell NL25 lap top. I am still trying to
get it up and running from a boot disk to see if the hard drive is not
damaged but had a question about installing any version of Linux on it.

The processor is only an 386 at 25Mhz
and it has 2 Megs of Ram expandable to 8mgs.
I'm not sure the HD space as I haven't gotten it running yet as I said but
that would be under a gig I would be almost certain.
256kb Video Ram
640x480 256 color LCD
3.5 inch floppy

I have a feeling it won't take but I am not familiar with all the different
versions of Linux available so I am just hoping there is something else out
there other than winblows 3.1x

Thanks

Working in root is a bad idea.

You should normaly leave the opening of the tty device to pppd and
call the dialer script from pppd as specified in the connect option.
The pppd program knows the trick to open the tty line when there is no
carrier present.

If you can get the system working you should be able to run linux on it
if you can put 8 MB of memory in it. You might take a look at Slackware.
There is some information here:

http://www.slackware.com/install/

There are also other systems like peanut linux or L.O.A.F. (linux on a
floppy) thought I have never used them. You can find several distros at:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/

Dear All,

I now have RH6.2 running in all its glory, including (after a mighty
struggle with setserial) mail, newsgroups and internet access. Hurrah!

However, I notice that most of the web pages I browse look different
from when I'm looking at them in Windows98, and I take it that this is
due to some kind of font substitution.

Is there a way that I can use Windows fonts in Linux, or are there
fonts such as Arial, Tahoma, etc available for Linux users?

Many Thanks,

Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:47:57 +0200

Hi,

I installed SuSE Linux 6.4 on my first Computer and it worked without
any porblem (see the partition tables below).
Then I put the Harddisk in a second computer an booting failed.
Lilo stopped with "LI".
All my partitions are inside an extended partition but /boot is below
cyl. 1024

After booting from a bootdisk the system is working fine.
Then I reinstalled lilo with /sbin/lilo (see lilo.conf below) but the
problem remained.

Is the problem, that the boot partition is in an extended partition?
Lilo should be in the MBR.

What could be the problem?

Hi
You have configured addresses x.x.x.115-121 to be on eth1 and 10.11.5.2
and 3 on eth0.
Your default route is x.x.x.115 (doesnt make sense, thats yourself).
To make x.x.x.y your default route, just do the following:
route del default
route add default gw x.x.x.y
or put this into /etc/route.conf
default x.x.x.y
and restart the routing.

yes you can. copy your TT fonts from Win98 or get them from the MS
web site: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fontpack/default.htm
since you're running RH 6.2 you've got xfs which supports TT so you're
good to go. read the Font HOWTO's.
also, i've got a little page w/some tips addressing this (see towards
the bottom of the page): http://www.stanford.edu/~epop/tips.html

I guess the first step is to look in /root and see what you have as
.Xclients or .Xclients-default. If your friend had not changed anything
from the initial setup, then the .Xclients would have been a copy of
/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients. If you used the Desktop switcher to change it,
then you may now have .Xclients-default.

Look in those .Xclients files (there may just be one of them) and see what
it says for exec. If it is a short file with just exec some-window-manager,
then you can change the wm name to AnotherLevel or fvwm2 if that is what it
was.

The problem here is that you don't really know what it was. Try
AnotherLevel and see if it looks right.

I'm surprised your friend let you know the root password actually. Whatever
you do, don't mess with any system files. Try the correction with only
those .Xclients files and not the system Xclients.

You could try changing the name of the .Xclients files to like old.Xclients
and/or old.Xclients-default and then run X. It should start up with the
system Xclients and you can see if that looks like what you had before.
Xclients goes looking for window managers on the system and drops into the
first one in its list that it finds. That Xclients goes into the home
directory, in this case /root, and can be edited by the user. You don't
know if your friend was using the original or had edited it. You may just
have to ask.
