Subject: How to write a device driver for data acquisition via ISA card
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 17:09:17 +0100
Hey everybody, I want to respond to a hardware interrupt from a data
acquisition card via ISA card. I manage to communicate with the card
throught simply I/O program. And now I would like to write a user program
with an interrupt handler.
My questions are:
1) My first step is to install the interrupt handler to the kernel. The
following is my source code. Is my structure of source code to install
interrupt handler correct? What am I missing? And what functions and header
files I need to install and service an interrupt routine?
#include <linux/sched.h>
main()
{
unsigned int CAN_irq = 9;
if (CAN_irq >= 0)
{
int result = request_irq(CAN_irq, CAN_ISR, SA_INTERRUPT, "CAN", NULL);
if (result)
{
printk(KERN_INFO "CAN card can't get assigned irq %i/n", CAN_irq);
CAN_ISR = -1;
}
return 0;
}
note: I also wrote CAN_ISR interrupt service routine.
2) Is there any example of device driver codes like this?
3) How to compile it? Is "gcc -O -D__KERNEL__ -o test test.c" correct?
4) Is it possible (reasonable, etc) to write a user program that uses a
hardware interrupt without writing a device driver?
For your information, I'm using RH 6.1 with gcc-2.91.66. I'm referring Linux
Device Driver by Alessandro Rubini and Linux Kernel Internal by M Beck, U
Kunitz and etc. Any other good references?
Thank you.

The map-drive command fakes the BIOS into thinking the slave hard drive
(windows) is the master hard drive. It does the same thing with the
master, faking the BIOS into thinking it's the slave. /dev/hdb1 is my
windows partition on my slave hard drive.
In my experience, windows always wants to be the master hard drive. I
also didn't want to touch the master boot record on the drive also.
So, in my configuration, when LILO prompts me for which OS/kernel I wish
to boot, I can give it "win" and it'll do its BIOS thing and windows
loads just fine. Windows also recognizes its hard drive as C:.
In my opinion, this configuration is: a) least disruptive of the mbr of
the windows drive, b) a rather safe option if I ever defrag the windows
drive (must run lilo again), and c) it works extremely well. I've
gotten several positive responses from people when they try this.
The lilo documentation has (I believe) this very implementation detailed
in an example. Look on pages 27,28 of the user guide for the example.
Even though it uses os2 as the example, the explanation of map-drive
specifically says is works for PC/MS-DOS.
I made this configuration permanent after getting tired of switching
jumpers all the time. And I think I saw an article on this in
linuxworld or something like that.
Email me if you have further questions.

I run RH6.1. The HP laserjet 4L printer works fine when installed and
tested using printtool. I cannot find a more closer driver, so I choose
LaserJet 4 - dithered.
However when I run StarOffice, the print-out from the StarWriter turns
out to be larger than normal. The printed page contains large text that
I think is 4 times larger, as if it is enlarged from A4 to A2 paper
size.
Has anyone encountered the same problem? I should appreciate if you can
help me solve this problem.
Thanks.

I agree with you!
More power is just dangerous for attacks.
But if there is no servers/proxies installed on that engine I don't
think that
128 Mb is necessary.

Lilo has this capability. At the lilo prompt you can press <TAB> for
the menu choices. OR, another option is to display the options from
/boot/message. Jus make a text file with your menu options in it.
/boot/message:
*** My Linux Computer ***
My /etc/lilo.conf header is this (I left out the kernel stuff):
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=8
default=redhat <-- default kernel/OS
keytable=/boot/us.klt
linear
prompt <-- prompt user
timeout=50 <-- timeout in 5 sec
Lilo pretty much has it all for me.

Hi all,
I've just got a NEC MultiSync FP950 and an S3 Savage4 Graphics Card
with 16MB of memory. It was straightforward to find an stable working
mode with Xconfigurator, which correctly recognized the graphics card
chip and had the monitor in its database. I'm using it at 1280x1024
32bpp color depth. The problem (a persistent one) is that everything is
displayed with shadows. For instance, windows frames appear with several
low intensity subframes, like a kind of "visual" echo or wavy effect.
I've tried all of the Xconfigurator-generated Video Mode lines for this
resolution without any success. The problem persists with other
resolutions (e.g. 1024x768, 800x600, etc.). I've also tried to make
adjustments with xvidtune and Moire canceller control of the monitor,
but no luck in getting rid of these upsetting waves.
Do you know how can I get a clean image?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!

Hey now!
I'm spankin new at this and am really excited. I have a microsolutions

Is it possible to install from an external CD drive? I managed to
partition the drives off the CD. 2. The only media options for
installing linux using the Debian package is either SCSI or IDE. I
don't have an internal CD drive so without an OS how does my system know
to install linux from an external CD drive via serial port?
Does this make sense? I thought about installing a internal CD drive
but wasn't sure if I had to.
Any help is appreciated!!!

You are making a common mistake that catches everyone at first.
You are confusing the package name with the rpm filename. I can
rename apache-1.3.12-2.rpm to gobeldygook.rpm, and it is STILL
known to rpm as apache. Try
rpm -e apache
and see what happens. You *may* have to specify the --nodeps
switch to sucessfully uninstall it. I fhtere are more than one
packages known as apache (say multiple upgrades that were simply
installed not actually upgraded) you will have to use the
--allmatches switch too. Rpm is a bit cryptic, I wish that I
could find a good text driven menu'd interface to rpm, anyone
reading this know of one?
Easier yet fire up X and start the KDE environment. Use
kpackager to search and uninstall each instance of apache that
you can find.

I might be heading off in the wrong direction, but I think you have a
DOS partition which has been split.
If so you will have to delete the new DOS partition with add another of
the same size with diskdruid. You will be able to initialize the new
partition as a Linux native.
I doubt that RH install without one.

Hi Chris,
Just a wild guess, but it sounds like a termination problem.
Here are some tips:
1) turn all of your terminators off on your peripherals and use
an "active" terminator at the end of your cable. (Yeh, active
terminators cost more, but the passive ones have stopped
working for years now.)
2) put your scsi card's bios into "automatic" termination
3) while you are in your scsi card's bios, use the "scan bus" utility
to check for all your devices
Hope this helps,

this is fairly easy but the first time can be hard.
First you need to get 2 network cards installed and running.
the you need to setup IP forwarding or masqarade.
if you are setting up a Private IP network (192.168.1.x or similar)
you need Masqarade if you have real IP's then you don't.
under /usr/docs/Linux-Mini-Howto and Linux-Howto there are ethernet
and Masqarade manuals. I found both to be very helpfull the first
time.

I'll check it out...
However, using Slackware Linux and Winblows, I could access everything no
problem.
Thanx!

hi!,
I downloaded a ISO image and burned it to a CD, but now I don't know how to
install it, under Linux it says that it is a executable file, but it doesn't
do anything when I try. What am I doing wrong here?
TIA

I did give full explanations in several other postings (no responses)
and I noticed that the less specific questions were getting more
answers so I decided to try that route. Thanks. I've figured out the
same solution as you and I do ftp to my directory and then telnet in
and mv the files and that is getting VERY old as well. It is a
solution better than floppies but not by much <g>.
A previous poster has some other suggestions I may try....
