Ok, I checked the rights and permissions, root did own the tree branch
but did not have rights. I changed the owner to a group I created and
then chmod'd the rights to 755 and it appears to work just fine.

Now, how do I block guest/anonymous from having ANY permissions what
so ever. This site has nothing that any user can have access to.

Also, I heard that you can block users from seeing the wu.ftp version
number (I'm guessing for security reasons) how is that done?

Tim, thanks for your help, so far you've led me to the right paths!

Hi there. I've rebuilt my kernel then done the make install, like 5 times
to fix the following error when I do the insmod ip_masq_h323, but I can't
fix it. I'm using Mandrake 7. Please assist because I'm stuck

./ip_masq_h323.o was compiled for kernel version 2.2.14-15mdk while this
kernel is version 2.2.14-1mdklinus.

        Thanks in advance,

Check www.2600.com they are being sued for posting links to sites about that but
as far as I know they still have them up in text form so you have to type it
into the address bar.

Let me know if you get it working. I'm dying to try it out.

linuxconf can also be used to add a new user. It is a nice way to get rid

Use imwheel (http://jcatki.dhs.org/imwheel/)
Works great.

I don't know if Debian has a boot image that will read off the
serial port cdrom, but you should be able to install it in one of
several ways.
1. Do the minimal floppy install (the floppy images should be on your
cd; they are on the official image and are downloadable, too). Then use
that installation to set up the driver to read the cdrom (assuming there
is a driver for it), and use apt/dselect to add any package you want.
2. Set up another pc as an NFS server, connect the two with either an
ethernet card or null modem cable (eth0 or PPP), and do an NFS install.
Note, you can install the minimal system from floppies if you like.
3. Use any OS/method to copy the wanted dcrom files to your hard drive,
and install from it using either a boot floppy or the small set (~7-9)
floppies for a small installation.

You burned it as a file instead of a ISO9660 CD image. You need to use the
correct proceedure in your burner software for opening and burning images.
The file might still be useable if it's in good shape if you deleted the
file from your hard disk. If you didn't use it and make sure you open it in
your software as an ISO9660 image file, not a plain file.

Cheers;

Put only the Bootpartition on the IDE, if your BIOS can't boot from the
off-motherboard controller.

Mount /dev/hdaX /boot (don't forget fstab entry), put the boot sector onto
this /dev/hdaX, install the kernel images into /boot.
In /boot are 20MB ok.

The error message I get when I do a status on the network dameon is:
Invalid EEPROM checksum, check setting before activating this device.

How come it works when I boot using LILO but not Loadlin.exe? Is this
because Windows is initializing the device and it doesn't get

How can I get around this problem? How can I force it to

Ok, I have very little important information on my computer, but there
is some. Now when I first installed linux, I had the mind to put
things on separate partitions, logical ones.

If I were to re-install over my old installation using nothing but the
rhat 6.1 cd and I keep the 1 partition where the data I want to save
is and delete and replace all the others...will that data still be
there after the install is done or will it be cleared? Assume I

I can't seem to be able to access my root account anymore. I've tried
to get my machine to boot into single user either by typing 'linux
single' or tried getting it to drop me into a shell by typing 'linux
init=/bin/sh' and reset it that way, but the boot up from lilo is too
quick. Ie. I set the time out to 0 in my /etc/lilo.conf. Is there
something I can press at bootup that will enable me to issue commands
at the lilo prompt, and not have the machine immediately continue to
boot? (I read that shift should do it but it doesn't seem to work for
me).

In another route, I've tried making a start up disk, which works but
linux keeps putting me in multi-user mode. What I need to do is get my
startup disk to put me in single user mode.

If anybody has any idea how to help me here please email me and let me
know of your solution.

Thanks Kris.

I have heard that RH messes up the httpd.conf file if you use linuxconf to
configure Apache. The <Files> directive I believe needs to be changed to
something like <Files ~/.ht> or something along those lines. I'm sure it
is either in this newsgroup or in another, the correct fix that is. I know
I'm close but what I typed doesn't look quite right.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Adding a new hard drive
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 21:17:04 GMT

I posted this yesterday, but it appears that there
is a problem with Motorola's newsserver. My
original post has not shown up on the Deja yet, so
I'm reposting it here.

I'm planning on adding a second hard drive to my
computer soon. My
current drive has a win98 partition, three native
linux partitions,
and a linux swap partition. My plan is to devote
the second hard
drive to linux and reclaim all the linux
partitions on the first drive
for windows. Here's my plan:

1) Add the new drive and boot into linux.
2) Use Mandrake's DiskDrak tool to partition and
format the new
   drive.
4) Edit the /etc/lilo.conf file to add a bootable
entry on the second
   hard drive.
3) Rerun lilo to update the boot sector.
4) Boot into linux on the first drive and copy all
my existing linux
data from the first drive to the second drive.
5) Boot into linux on the second drive to insure
that everything
   works.
6) Boot into DOS and use FDISK to reformat the
linux partitions as a
   DOS partition.

I have a few questions here. First, is this a
reasonable scenario of
events? Am I overlooking any gotchas? Has anyone
done this and can
give me some pointers? Particularly, I have these
questions:

Will DOS see my Linux partitions on the first
drive, or do I need to
delete the ext2 partitions using a linux tool
(fdisk, diskdrak, etc.)?

Is cp a sufficient way to do this? I'm wondering
if there will be
references to the first drive on the second
drive. If cp is a good
way to do this, what options should I use to
insure that all my data
is mirrored to the second drive? Should I just
reinstall?

If anyone has done this recently, I'd love to hear
about the
experience, and anything that may have went wrong.

Thanks a lot,
Aaron

Boot a rescue floppy.

If you want, the data won't be touched. During the install (and if you
choose that you partition the disk, not the install-script) you just
select that that partition may not be used.

Afterwards (when your system is set up) you can mount it.

PS You can also select (during install) to have it mounted during boot.
PPS Keep in mind, that I have RH 6.2, but think (hope) that 6.1 won't be
that different.

If you installed Linux with a bootable CD, reboot with that CD. Maybe
there is a 'rescue mode' available (or a 'linux single').

On the other hand, Rick Ellis' idea may be more efficint.

I use a dual-boot with redhat 6.2 (have used it with 6.0 and 6.1) via
loadlin. It seems functionally identical as long as you mount a fat32
partition and copy your kernel over into the dos world so loadlin can get
at the identical kernel. Once the kernel is loading, the rest appears the
same whether in loadlin or lilo. You probably have to be certain not to
load any drivers from config.sys and autoexec.bat before running loadlin.
(btw: no problems with nic)
      good luck - Mick
