Im replying to this because I just helped an associate solve a similar
problem.

Here are some more ideas as per crashing:

1. Yes, Ram can be a problem. Windows seems to be (at times) more
lieniant on
hardware than Unix system are. Thus problems that dont show up in
windows will
show up in Unix systems.

Testing ram with "test programs" is not a very good way to actually test
if the
ram is actually bad. It will catch major problems with the ram but if
your dropping one bit over a long period of time the test program may
not catch it but unix will. Also, Test programs send a set pattern of
tests. I recommend
actually running a kernal compile. This will point out any short
commings in
system hardware (sig9,11 crashes).

2. System overheating. I have dealt with systems (pentium +) that
actually had
poor fans, No heatsink compound, slow or stopped fans, dirty heatsinks
and dust
in general that cause a processor to heat up enough to cause a problem.

3. Miss matched memory, Poorly seated memory... Things like that.

What I found really interesting after doing some research is the method
of
creating ram memory. They dont make 60,70 ns ect.. ram. They create a
batch of
ram and then subject it to tests. If it passes the criteria for
(example) 60ns
then its 60ns ram. They dont just run different lines for PC100,PC133,
ect..

4. Cache Memory could be not up to snuff. Turn off cache memory in bios
and test it.

5. Increase your wait states in bios if you can. See if this solves the
problem.

We actually found a network card that was crashing a RH7.1 install just
the
other day. Go figure.....

Hope this helps anyone in the group that is having problems with
crashes.

Yes, you are right. The problem has been tracked down now. Seems that the
site has problems with konqueror and Netscape 6. Netscape 4.x and MSIE seem
to work. I have contacted the administrators of the website about that
issue. Actually, their ASP-script crashes. Even if it isn't suppoed to run
with konqueror or Netscape 6, it shouldn't simply crash but tell the user
to use a different browser. And since all the other pages belonging to that
website work well with konqueror and Netscape 6, I don't see why they
shouldn't be able to fix their script so that also the page that causes
trouble will work.

Interesting! My system has via686 onboard sound, and when I tried the
alsa-drivers I couldn't get it to produce any reasonable sound quality. The
driver that comes with the Linux kernel does, however, work fine...

Hello,

I am installing Mandrake 8.0 and I kept getting the error "no hdlists
found". Could anyone please help ??
The spec of my system is roughly this:
Dual Celeron 500 CPU
256MB RAM
Have both WinME and Win2000 installed.
Have 20GB HD partitioned into 2 parts and 3rd one for all the Linux
related partitions

If anyone could help, it would really be greatly appreciated .. else I am
really looking at getting rid of WinDoze totally .. :)
Also, I am using telstra cable, but I can't quite find the program to
logon to the network .. if anyone knows where I can get access to it,
please please let me know, too ... :))
Thank you so much~~

Hi,

does anybody knows which is the file containing the definition for the
variuos "SunCompose" combinations? I looked for it in the /usr/X11R6
directory but I didn't realized which one is the right one.

(In particular, I am trying to produce the euro symbol with an america
keyboard).

Thanks a lot

Btw it does not work with mozilla 0.9 either. But it works fine in
Konqueror, if you configure it to pretend being a netscape (user agent
settings).

Subject: Kernel Panic Formatting drive on RH 7.1 install
Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 17:01:01 GMT

Hello:

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 7.1 on a 486 DX-2 66 MHz with
32 MB of RAM and a 512MB Hard Disk. I can boot the install diskette in
text mode, and go through the whole configuration, up to partitioning the
drive. After partitioning, it makes me enable swap space because it wants
more RAM, and that goes fine. Then when I select the packages I want and
it goes to format the drive, I get a kernel panic message, the screen
keeps scrolling without end, and I have to power off the computer.

I know the hardware is configured correctly because I can install and boot
windows 95 on the box. I told the Red Hat setup not to use linear mode,
as I figure a 486 would not have it. I tried both ways though. I also
noticed that during boot, the kernel was assuming a 50 MHz IDE bus, so I
gave the install diskette the idebus=33 paramater, but this did not help.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it?

Thank you...

Of course, this is Linux :-)

It's all very subjective, you should try a few distros yourself and
follow with your own inclinations.

That said, Debian is *very* cool.

I want normal users to be able to mount floppys so they can read them from my

The floppy device is owned by root with group floppy and permissions
brw-rw----. In fstab, the entry for the device is as follows:

/dev/fd0 /mnt auto noauto,users 0 0

Is there something wrong with this?

Yes, konqueror can do it with a modified USER-AGENT string. I have just
verified it. I don't know about mozilla 0.9, though.

Anyway, according to my understanding it's clearly the fault of a website
programmer if his script crashes when encountering some specific browsers.
As I said, I contacted the webmaster of that site because some of the users
in the network I manage regularely access pages on that site. I hope that
they'll fix it, otherwise there's nothing I can do about it...

What about using:

grep -r SunCompose /usr/X11R6

Try to stick with the latest distro of Linux that has the new XFree86.
Geforce 2 might be hard to set up with older XFree86.

I already tried it (I also tried find /usr/X11R6 -name *Sun* -print).
With grep, the only file that matched was
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
which doesn't help me.

Looks like you might have forgotten to put the "1" in
(I'm assuming the number you're trying to call is long-

What does your partition table look like on this drive? I'm not really
an expert, but I don't think /dev/hda2 indicates a logical partition.

Has anyone out there ever successfully installed or upgraded their
RedHat system from a hard drive?

I have followed all instructions in accordance with the RedHat site
explaining how to do this but the install program crashes.

I have downloaded all the packages out of the RPMS directory using
several different FTP sites. I downloaded all the files from the base
directory and copied the boot.img file to a disk. It seems as soon as
the installer gets to a point to where it is going to use these files on
the hard drive, it crashes. It appears it is having a problem with one
or more of these files.

I should also include that there is one particular file out of the base
directory that I continually have had a problem with downloading from
every FTP site I have tried. The file is called stage2.img. It never
seems to ever successfully download for me. It apparently is a huge
file (some 87 MB). Has anyone ever successfully downloaded this file?
Does anyone know what it is?

Thanks for any help, advise or feedback.
