I have to second this ICP vortex are great cards. His hardware is
definitely adequete, but what is he serving?
With only 2 18GB disks, I'd consider giving SCSI a miss all together, and
using fast IDE disks, very good experience using the fast IBM ones in web
servers.
For the money saved, you could buy 512MB RAM and something like a Promise
ATA-100 card with 2 extra disks.
RAID 10 gives better performance, than RAID 1, an advantage of software
RAID is it's easier to mix and match depending on what integrity
requirements you have.
The second thing is, Debian. It's a great distro, but if you're asking the
questions about the server, because you're new to Linux, you'ld be much
better off with SuSE 7.2, or RH 7.1. They're much easier to configure, and
you get (with SuSE) solid ReiserFS and LVM support. Debian potato is
rather dated now.

You're installing lilo into the partition, not the MBR. Are you using
another boot manager?
Try boot=/dev/sda, and get your BIOS to boot off that disk as C:.

Run it with ./filename instead of just filename.

The current directory is not is the path that's searched for executables. Type:

I've seen this often -- as you've determined, the pcmcia loads after the network
tries to initialize. This causes a problem because pcmcia is needed for the
network driver. To fix this, change the order in which the two load by either
editing the files in /etc/rc.d/init.d/network and ./pcmcia or renaming the
symlinks in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and ./rc5.d.
#!/bin/sh
#
# network Bring up/down networking
#
# chkconfig: 2345 10 90
The chkconfig line tells which runlevels to load network, and at what point in
the bootup it should initialize. In this case, runlevels 2,3,4 and 5. At about
10% of the startup it will run. Then look at the pcmcia:
# chkconfig: 2345 09 96
Make sure that pcmcia runs before network.
Once you've gotten the card to safely initialize, try using ifconfig to assign
an IP address and netmask. Ping the IP address of the interface.

Avoid plug and play. IIRC, there's a soundblaster mode for this card. Try
checking the Linux Laptop HOWTO (search google.com) for this laptop.

Some programs will allow you to choose your sound output type. You'll need to
use something like EsounD. From the package info:
EsounD, the Enlightened Sound Daemon, is a server process that mixes
several audio streams for playback by a single audio device. For
example, if you're listening to music on a CD and you receive a
sound-related event from ICQ, the two applications won't have to
jockey for the use of your sound card.
Install esound if you'd like to let sound applications share your
audio device.

I started getting this with kernel 2.4.5. The only workaround I've had was to
disable the matrox specific stuff and use the generic fb. The performance was
poor though, so I dropped back to 2.4.4. It seems to be matrox specific because
it works fine with an ATI Rage 128 All-In-Wonder.

I installed and ran Mandrake 7.2 and used Drak to reset my video
mode to 1024x768. Now, the system boots into text mode. If I do a
startx it tries to go to graphical mode but just returns to text
mode. I used XF86Config to reconfig the video but I still get the
same situation. Can anyone help me out?

If you have been cracked, then you've got no choice but to reinstall.
Until you do that, you don't know which programs are trustworthy &
which aren't. In particular, things like netstat, ls, and ps may well
have been tampered with.

Thankyou very much!
I have made sure all my C compiler installation is OK, and ran through the procedure
again,
./configure
make
without modifying the GNUmakefile.in, to see what would happen.
It starts out fine, so your remedy seems to have cured the problem of missing
headers.
However, apart from several warnings I run into this:
Form.c: In function `RefigureLocations':
Form.c:240: too few arguments to function
make[1]: *** [Form.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/fontutils-0.6-linux/widgets'
make: *** [libraries] Error 2
A quick look at the source, gives this:
#grep "RefigureLocations" widgets/Form.c
static void RefigureLocations(w)
RefigureLocations(fw);
RefigureLocations( (FormWidget)w );
RefigureLocations( fw );
Any ideas?

It is in RH 7.1, yet I do not remember exactly where.
It seems from the Start Menu, go to Application, and choose System or so
almost at the end of the list. When the next list comes, it is about
one-third
from top of the list/menu.

I can't help you with your problem exactly, but I can confirm that
Mandrake 8.0's mount behavior is extremely flaky. I just did this
install last night, so I haven't had much time to fight with mine. At
the moment, however, if I mount my cdrom manually (with a full command
line, not using fstab) it mounts fine, but if I use fstab (which has
the same devices, options, etc as my command line) it instead mounts
my floppy drive to the cdrom mount point. Explain that one to me!
I agree with another post that this is very likely due to the
supermount bs, and I plan on attacking that on my next go-round.

Some advice please ladies and gentlemen....
My SuSE 7.0 machine sometimes gets stuck when shutting down at the point
where the swapfile is "unmounted". Unfortunately this is before the
system partitions have unmounted, so on the next boot all my partitons
have to be scanned, which is tedious and no doubt unhealthy. Can anyone
help me work out why this is happening, and is it safe/possible to get
the system unmounted before the swap partition.
My system is a dual P500III with 512Mb DRAM and 102Mb swap partition.
Thanks in advance,
