First of all you need to find out what module kernel module
this card will be driven by. Assuming that it's sound-blaster
compatible (because I've not heard of it before, but that
doesn't always mean a lot) you will need to compile the
modules for the sound blaster card. This involves recompiling
your kernel. You may have to download a new kernel source
as your distribution may not have all the correct bits
and pieces.

So the basic steps are:
1) Read the Kernel-HOWTO it explains most of the kernel
   compilation steps.
2) Download the latest 2.2 series kernel source.
3) Unpack the source in /usr/src
4) Make menuconfig and choose your favorite options
5) Compile the kernel and modules.
6) Install the kernel and update LILO
7) Reboot and live happily ever after :)

Once this is all done you should be able to load up the
correct module using modprobe et voila! your sound
should work.

Feel free to mail me if you get stuck,
HTH

Subject: Problem X
Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 00:15:40 +1000

Thanks Derek and anyone who helped.

I ve installed the new Geforce driver and after modifying
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I can now start X, but this has to be done explicitly
(by typing "startx") every time i login. How can I tell RH to start X
automatically? That is how to login under GUI not text-based?

Also every time i logout from X, it gives me random error messages, saying X
server cannot shut down or waiting to be shut down or something like that, I
can't remember exactly (but i can post up some of the messages if required).
So I ve tried to upgrade to XFree86 4.0.2, but the above problems still
can't be solved, whats more, X is very unstable, it hangs all the time.

Would XFree86 4.0.3 solve all of the above problems?
I ve read some of the posts here, and people say 4.0.3 is causing more
trouble than 4.0.2, what can i do??

Anyone please help!!!
Thanks in advance.
(pls reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if possible)

edit your /etc/inittab file and find the line

id:3:initdefault:

Change the 3 to a 5 (runlevel 5 is gui)

save and reboot

its an pci card, not an isa.
but i think i have found the problem.
in bios "pnp os" was aktive, after i switched it off the card is working
fine

perhaps some other read this, it looks like as if the kernel 2.2.17 doesnt
work like an pnp os, good to know :p

Hmm.. My AMD (T-bird 900 OC to 1GHz @ 133x7.5) runs fine.. I'll have to look into
that.. I knew there
was aproblem with the cpuid causing a kernel oops but that was no real
issue....

On the otherhand.. I always backup my important data and start clean ;)

No, use a more advanced mail client for that, from the commandline use
elm which supersedes mail, and you can attach file with elm -A file.
Or use an interactive mail client such as pine.

Subject: New server setup questions - need comments
Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 10:34:44 -0400

Hi, all -

I am looking to build a server for home use. I have the machine - 128MB
RAM,
four 9-GB SCSI disks in an external cabinet, a 4GB internal IDE disk and a
pair of Pentium Pros. The server is intended to host a DNS server, web
server, mail server, proxy server and database server.

It will be on a LAN connected to the net via cable modem, and I will want to
access it at least via http/https so I can check my mail from work. Once I
am
familiar with them I will try to set up an OpenSSH server and maybe IPsec.
I
am using a hw router/fw combo (RT314); will I need to set up ipchains as
well?

My goal is to install a Red Hat-based distro with a 2.4 kernel and ReiserFS
(I
am going to run Oracle on it, which best supports Red Hat). Are there any
such animals out there pre-packaged, or should I just install a 2.2 rev to
get
up, d/l and compile 2.4 and patch in ReiserFS? I note my preferred Linux
(Mandrake) isn't there yet. Ideally I would like to install a minimal root
partition, set up the SCSI array as a RAID 0 device, and install /var and
/usr
on the array. Does this make sense, or should I just install the distro on
the IDE disk, set up /opt on a /dev/md0 array and use that for my optional
software? Are there any installation programs that allow one to set up a
software RAID array out of the box?

Also - to harden the server I was thinking of downloading the Bastille
scripts. Does anyone know if they have compatibility problems with the type
of base install I want to do?

The database side I know how to do (I am a DBA). The proxy server I assume
will be squid, the web server Apache, of course. The mail server - should I
stick with procmail and put a POP/IMAP server on top of that (and whose
should
I use?) or look at some of the commercial freeware versions (I would have
used
OpenMail before HP pulled the plug; but there are others out there - my goal
is to get mail via the web, via Pine or Kmail at home, and to let my wife
use
her Otlook Express client <sigh>)? The DNS server - BIND 8.x is of course
the
most popular, but also the most exploited. Should I look for alternatives
(I
have noted some in passing)?

So, what is the combined wisdom of the group? This will be a mjor
undertaking
for me, so before I plunge into serious knowledge acquisition I'd like to
get
this planned right.

TIA! -

Regards,

Jared Hecker

Don't forget to keep your old kernel around for a while, it's better
if something in the new kernel does not work as planned...

You may not have enough "slack" to do this. But parted will allow you to "edit"
partitions somewhat. Use it off a boot disk.

Jan Just figured it out for me: I had my box configured to use DHCP without knowing
it, so it was ignoring my static IP's that I gave it.

Thanks Jan!

Davide...

I am a real newbie with Linux so have some very basic questions. I am
running RH7 and KDE. Linux is dualbooted with Win2000Pro on a Micron 1.2 GHz
Athlon. What do I need to do to be able to read files on my Win2000 NTFS
partition from my Linux partition? When I use File Manager in KDE I see
several drives mounted - CD, floppy, Zip, but if I insert a Zip cartridge,
for example, don't see anything on it. I also have a Jaz drive that I don't
see in File Manager, and I also don't see - or at least don't know where to
look for - my Win2000 partition.

RH7 was installed by my company's Unix/Linux tech, so I am not really up to
speed yet on it. He's good, but he's not a teacher.

I haven't done anything about mounting anything that isn't already mounted.
I've read a little about autofs, but don't really know if it's on my
machine, or if it is, how to use it. I barely understand the Linux file
system. I am a pretty experienced DOS/Win user, but never used Linux/UNIX
before, so am just getting started.

Can you give me any specific instructions as to how to access my Win2000
partition (and also shared network drives) from Linux? I do understand that
NTFS is read-only at this time, but that's OK for now.

Thanks!
Optiker

partition magic >= 4.0 can handle linux ext2fs partitions.

p.s. why do you crosspost? what is the point of having more than 1
usenet newsgroup then? think about it.

recognized my ethernet card wrongly. It recognized it as
"PCMCIA""100base"(using cardctl ident). But my card is actually Compex
linkPort TX16A 10/100 Fast Ethernet. Anybody know how to change it?

TQ.

After inserting the module, you brought up your ethernet card, right?

ifup eth0

The best X configuration tool is 'xf86config' .. Backup XF86Config first.
