Hopefully, you have a Windows 2000 boot disk or rescue disk of some sort
because all of the info I have seen says if you are dual booting with NT ,
then you must NOT install LILO to the MBR or you will wipe out the OS Loader
in NT. The instructions seem to always recommend loading LILO to the /
partition and to use a Linux boot disk to initiate LILO. Maybe someone has
a solution, but you could be in for some trouble if LILO is in your MBR.

I only got the install disk. The file was not currupted. It was only missing
the Boot directory which is not available for non-ISO download on any of the
mirrors.

printtool is the best. Are you sure you restarted after adding/editing
print queue? Check redhat.com's doc page for Printing Tips.
For Windoze, I made a separate print queue without filter, and configured
samba for this queue to be shared with Windoze.

Hi all,
I am using kernel 2.4.3 and I have attached a USB-IDE harddisk to my
thinkpad 600.
Right now, the current status is
Upon booting up
cat /proc/scsi/sci gives the following
Attached devices:
Host : scsi0 Channel : 00 Id: 00 Lun:00
Vendor :Quantum Mdoel: Sirocco1700A
Type : Direct Access ANSI SCIS revision :02
cat /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/0 gives
Host scsi0: usb-storage
Vendor : Anchor Chips, Inc.?Firmare Fra
Product: Firmware Frameworks....
Serial Number:None
Protoclol :8020i
Transoport: Control/Bulk
GUID :04e60001000000000....
I also do a "mount -t usbdevfs /dev/usbdevfs /mnt/usbhd"
and when I "cd" to /mnt/usbhd
I got
"001" as a directory and 2 files, "devices" and "drivers"
and under directory "001", there are 2 files "001" and "002".
so what can I do further....i have tried fdisk /dev/usbdevfs and of
course failed.
any pointer or advise are appreciated.
I am really eager to get my USB-IDE HD going...
thks a lot.

It's a lot more than a nickel, IIRC. The DOS fdisk program is not the
safest way to partition, because you will lose the Windows Operating System.
Fips (First non-destructive Interactive Partition Splitting program) is the
safe way to re-partition a hard drive to maintain windows and dual boot with
linux. It is only about a half a Mbyte and a free download from the
internet (includes some instructions...never enough, though). You have to
make a floppy boot disk and add the fips program to the floppy. To use
fips, you have to boot from that DOS boot floppy and type (and enter) fips
at the command prompt. You can NOT work from a DOS prompt in Windows. For
me, using fips was a little complicated and the instructions weren't crystal
clear. The good news is that you can start fips and adjust the partition
size, and then abort the program without doing any damage. The changes
you make in fips will only be permanent on the last step, which is to
confirm the changes you made to the partition table.

I also use @home and have had no problems with RH 6.2, 7.0 or 7.1.
I set it up as a static connection, i. e. nor DHCP. I've always inserted
the primary IP address, Gateway, etc. Also, I do not use the proxy
server as thios seems to slow it down.
My connection is stable and secure.

Build your kernel with reiserfs in the kernel not as a module then in your
etc/lilo.conf , remove the entry initrd=/boot/initrd.img
This is how mine looks:
image=/boot/bzImage
label=2.4.4
root=/dev/hda7
append="hdc=ide-scsi"

What you did is remove you DSL line interface which is also a router. What
you need to do is put the box back in and place it in "bridge mode". This is
what I did with mine and it now just passes everything through.

I think it is the interpretation of the msg as I also get a "warning" that
the boot partition is not on the 1st drive; this happens when I compile
the kernel and after lilo is installed in my /boot directory of the "/"
(root) partition. My fdisk for my winnt4 & linux box shows the following:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 1 9 72261 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdb2 10 264 2048287+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb3 265 1412 9221310 83 Linux

/dev/hdb5 1413 1795 3076416 83 Linux
/dev/hdb6 1796 1970 1405656 83 Linux
/dev/hda is all win nt4.
The partitions are swap, /, /usr, /usr/local, /home; the "extended
partition" was created for /usr/local & /home because one cannot create
more than 4 primary partitions and the swap, / & /usr are primary partitions
and the partitioning is all done with fdisk (no idea why linux would
label the "extended" partition as win95 format.
The other machine with dos, win98se & linux and system commander would
show nearly the same with fdisk but the partitions sizes would be
much smaller (smaller drives).

Still think the problem is having the 2nd drive on the 2nd ide channel.
Did you or can you also tell sc that the drive is on the 2nd ide channel
as part of the parameters; e.g. with scsi, if one has 2 scsi adapters
and each containing 1 harddrive, one needs to tell whatever that the
2nd harddrive is residing on the 2nd scsi adapter since both drives have
an address id of "0". The 1st adapter would be identified as "0" and the
2nd adapter identified as "1".
The 2 ide channels are like having 2 ide adapters as each channel has its
own IRQ (usually "14" for the primary and "15" for the secondary). Without
telling system commander to switch the IRQ from 14 to 15 to look for the
2nd drive, I don't think SC would ever find the 2nd "boot" partition or
something like that.

One way is to upgrade your kernel.
I had a modem and HD controller conflict using 2.2.10. I didn't want to
move hardware since it all worked well under Windows.
I upgraded the kernel to 2.4 and it solved the problem by recognizing
IRQ sharing and providing a better serial driver.
Give it a try!

My USB CF reader presents itself as a SCSI drive. Check
/var/log/messages after doing a
insmod usb-storage
You should see something like this:
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: sdc : READ CAPACITY failed.
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: sdc : status = 1, message = 00, host
= 0, driver = 08
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: sdc : extended sense code = 2
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: sdc : block size assumed to be 512
bytes, disk size 1GB.
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: sdc: I/O error: dev 08:20, sector 0
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: unable to read partition table
May 2 23:53:13 c705613-a kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.
May 2 23:53:47 c705613-a kernel: usb.c: deregistering driver
usb-storage
May 2 23:53:47 c705613-a kernel: scsi : 2 hosts left.
(I don't have a card inserted, which is why the reads failed --
but it works just fine when I have a card in)

It won't be long before the CPU is a card in a slot on your ATX videoboard

Well, one: why you want to 'reinstall' Linux? You can upgrade each
single application/part of the system without reinstalling the
whole. Two: usually if you upgrade some part, there is no modification
in the configuration or in the programs already installed (unless you
screw up the libraries or remove the configuration files in /etc).
Three: if you backup/restore your configuration files into /etc you
can restore them and have the same configuration as before (unless
you change completely distribution). But first reply the (one)
question... why are you reinstalling linux?
