Notice that boot=/dev/hda1 means that lilo is installed into the first
sector of /dev/hda1. If that is a vfat partition, the file system is
destroyd. Check the -u option of lilo to un-destry the file system.

Mandrake is cool with the 1024 limit too, if you decide to use Grub instead
of Lilo. So just go ahead and install the two. I have done this and quite
happy with it.
If you have a raw disk, I suggest, Make only Windows partitions first. Keep
the balance disk raw. Then install Mandrake 7.2 on the balance disk.

I think, I need to fly there. We do such installations at $5 flat for entire
installations. If the companies are too tight on budget, we even do that
free of cost.

under windoze: first make sure that your linux box is allowed to connect
to your running x-server (check x authority). then use some ssh-client
(like putty or terraterm ssh) and make a remote login to your linux box.
under linux: after logging in, use following command to set your DISPLAY
variable:
export DISPLAY=name_of_your_windoze_box:0.0 (if you use another display
than 0 on your windoze box, then change 0.0 to the correct display
number)
now it should work. if not, please post error messages here.

try:

I'm not sure on the lilo version that ships with RH 6.2, but even if it does
support booting beyond cylinder 1024, you cannot be sure that the BIOS does.
Therefor, just make a small /boot at the start of the disk, and it will work
without any problems.

You don't want to do that. / should be about 64MB. /usr should be about
1-2GB, /var should be about 200MB-1GB, depending on need. /tmp should
be linked to /var/tmp. /home should be the rest. See the Partition HOWTO.

No, you probably already have the default DOS bootloader in your MBR.
It's only function is to boot the partition that has the "active" flag set.
Put LILO eg. in a partitions bootsector and activate that partition.
That way, if you reinstall windows, and teh MBR gets overwritten,
the only thing you need to do to get LILO back, is reactivate the linux
partition form DOS.

I recently found the following messages in my syslog:

May 17 15:43:35 rumba kernel: EXT2-fs warning (device ide0(3,7)): \
ext2_free_inode: bit already cleared for inode 577323
...
When I found them, I went down to SingleUser to do a fsck on /dev/hda7
(mounted on /usr). There were some inconsistencies and some files seem
to be lost (without beeing connected to lost+found), some others seem
to be corrupted, but the system basically works and I'll be able to
repair the rest.
But one question stays: Why did this happen? There was another
interesting message in the log which could shed some light on the
reason for this incident:
May 17 10:20:49 rumba kernel: hda: lost interrupt
Could this be a sign that my disk is dying? I never saw such a
behaviour of ext2 before...

When your system freeze, try using ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X
server, then see if there are some messages left on the console.
Try to locate the problem. See also into /var/log/messages if there

So you had to learn the hard way.

Yeah, so you can work/experiment on that file, and not touch the partition

restore from back-up.
It's a shitty response, but back-up is your responsibility. If you neglect
that,
it's really your problem. Besides I can't tell what you did when you
reinstalled.
I doubt that a crash would make every superblock back-up unusable.
I suspect you did something far worse afterwards.

Mine run toward a monitor that self-protects itself when asked to do a
higher hscan rate than it can do. For instance, I have a pair of NEC
5FG's, which xconfigurator seems to think can do a 79khz hscan. They
don't shut down when pushed that hard, but they do only about half a
screen width. Hand editing the resultant XF86Config file to reduce the
high range to 69khz, and they're both happy as a clam for the last 2
years.
Running a cheap SiS-6326 video card at 1152x864, 16 bits deep.
Cheers, Gene

With that new levy, you're allowed to make a personal copy of anything
you can get your hands on. So you could borrow a CD from a friend or
the library etc., and make your own.

You might try a computer store. They tend to have things that computers
can use.
