The install disk goes straight into the install process no matter what I
type (it is a floppy, the CD can't boot on my system, it was downloaded and
burned as packages...)
I tried it with the other lilo disk and it got a kernel panic when it tried
to mount it, failed because of incorrect or unsupported options...
I'm guessing the 2.0.x kernel used to create the old lilo disk was missing
some improvements to the filing system...
Any other ideas?

Myself, I would use a resizing tool such as parted. Some people
like Partition Magic, but I would rather not use that as a boot
manager, though it seems to be OK as a resizer.
You can also backup your partitions one by one to somewhere else on
the disk, then resize them, then restore. Of course, you need to
plan this carefully in advance.

There is a doc called:
Linux System Administrator's Survival Guide
I'm sure google will find it for you.
Please don't use telnet, you can do everything and more with ssh,
you can use scp (secure copy) which comes with ssh, instead of ftp
and it is much more secure.
The ssh package should have come with your distro, perhaps it's
installed and the sshd is running (ssh -v -v hostname) to check,
you can connect to localhost if your network setup is OK.

I changed the id of my extended partition from 0x05
to 0x85.. and now Win98 does not see it.. does not
assign drive letters to it, and all Win apps run
normally.. Thanks for all the help.. I was just
curious about some of the other posts I had seen
where some folks said that extended partition with
id 0x05 have been working fine for them and others
(my self included) who said changing to 0x85 fixed
everything.. I am sure there is some setup specific
thing going on here. Anybody care to shed some
light on this..
Best Regards,
Kishore.

Try getting cygwin from redhat.com, the windows ssh client is rather
nicer then telnet.

That would be an X Server. The server displays teh graphics, the clients
are the programs that display on them. There are x servers for windows,
but they are rather expensive. I have seen this
http://freshmeat.net/projects/weirdx/ but have never had much luck
getting it to run myself.

That sounds more like you want VNC. Servers and clients are available for
both Linux and Windows. Its a little tricky to explain, but you can see
the website for screenshots:

I've been working with my boxes trying to get my iomega usb cd to work.
You'll need the 2.4 kernel to get the USB support. Generic scsi support
will also need to be enabled. Long story short... I can get to where I
can mount the CD-RW and read CD's, I just can't burn them.
Last time I tried was several months ago (2.4.0 kernel) and the utilities
that had support for that drive were limited to cdrecord > 2.9, then I
learned that the 2.10 lost support for that drive... It may be fixed by
now... and those cdrocrd versions are just for example, I don't remeber
the exact version #'s.
You can look on the iomega linux site and probably find an article I
posted sometime ago about getting the drive to work... You can also
check out www.linux-usb.org for more support...

They are called Xservers, not clients. There are some free (as in
gratis0 ones which can be found on your local tucows mirror.
http://www.tucows.com
select MS windows version --> Server Tools --> X-Windows Servers
The either run xdm on the linux machine, and tell the windows Xserver to
do an XDMCP query to the linux machine. That should result in a graphical
login prompt, after which you get the default windowmanager with KDE in
your windows machine. Otherwise, if the Xserver you found doesn't
support XDMCP queries, start the xserver on the windows machine, then
log in to the linux machine via telnet or ssh (if the windows ssh client
supports X11 forwarding), and do one of (depends on the shell):
export DISPLAY=hostname.of.windows.machine:0
export DISPLAY=ipnumber.of.windows.machine:0
export DISPLAY=hostname.of.windows.machine:0.0
setenv DISPLAY ipnumber.of.windows.machine:0
and then you can start X-applications manually, with "xterm &" or start
an displaymanager manually "startkde &"

Your developers may not understand the issues... reiserfs recovers
faster, but not significantly better. You are more likely to have a sane
directory structure after crash, but the correctness (or even existance)
of the data is about the same as ext2. Also, there can be corruption
even so, and that's why there is an fsck (by whatever name) for
reiserfs. If you don't run it you could have undetected problems. See
the reiser docs, I don't remember the details, one of the developers
explained.
Note that unrecoverable corruption is unlikely with either fs, but not
impossible. And a look at the changelogs for 2.4 development shows that
there are still fairly frequent cases where reiser needs fixes for cases
which are infrequent enough to have missed developer testing, but happen
often enough to require fixes now. I would regard reiser as less stable
than ext2, even though the design has features which some people find
very useful.
| As a consequence of the fact
| that power can be removed at any time, there is no graceful shutdown of this

Other people have addressed this in other ways than "let it crash and
recover..." That mode doesn't sound particularly robust.
| I am told by one of the developers that reiserFS will be the new
| default file system in the next release of Linux.
That's by no means clear unless the decision is being made on
political rather than technical factors. IBM and SGI have spent time and
money porting the JFS and XFS journaling filesystems to Linux. In
particular JFS has been around in production for a decade, and is likely
to have a lot fewer obscure bugs than any new fs. Since JFS (on AIX)
includes all sorts of RAID-0 and 1 capability and features of the VFS, I
don't know if they are in the Linux version or if the current Linux RAID
and VFS stuff is used.
| I wonder what some of the
| developers here have to say about reiserFS and its reliability in a
| situation where power can and will be removed frequently from an embedded
| system.
Reiser was never designed for such use, nor was any other Linux fs
I've seen. Note that in a system crash with power on the physical writes
complete, vs. a power fail in which the actual write may be defective.
Journaling filesystems in general are aimed at the former case, since in
a normal computer application the power supply almost always has power
to keep the physical write going, and give the CPU a ms or two to use
powerfail to abort queued i/o. To actually drop all power generates
problems which most vendors do not try to solve with off the shelf
solutions.
Doesn't mean it can't work, but the operation is outside the usual
design parameters. perhaps the reiser developers will have some
additional comments, I don't in any way speak for them.

Obviously the IP and the x's in domain are changed and I'll use mine,
but where you have "files" it actually says "files"?
I'm not in front of the machine in question to look at it, but shouldn't
there be more under hosts at least? Or whatabout where you put in your
host name (c12345-a) or IP? Don't you need the host name somewhere
whether you're static or DHCP?
Oh I'm still going to give this a try when I get home! I'll try anything
that doesn't involve small woodland creatures.
I'm just thinking that there's so much more that might be needed...but
then, that might be part of my problem.
(But I still can't imagine that you don't have to tell it the gateway at
least.)
Thanks for your help!! =)

Hi,
I want to connect a RH6.2 pc to the internet through a Freesco-router.
The router is working fine I think, because from the router I can ping
both my network and the ISP. From the network I can ping the router. But
I can't manage to connect from the network through the router to the
internet. I tried to fill in all information I got: (default) gateway,
DNS, netmasks, anything I could think of. Nothing works. (Now I've
temporarily placed the NIC in another pc directly connected to the
modem.)
Can somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I should set up
the connection?
Thank you very much
