Subject: XFree86 problems
Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 00:29:49 +0200
Hej all.
I have now been trying to get XFree86 4 to work for days, but without luck.
My system is a AMD Athlon 1200 on a soltek 75-KAV motherboard and a Palit
Daytona GeForce 2 Pro graphics card. My monitor is an old Sony Multiscan
200GS.
I startet the SuSE 7.0 installation (with Yast2), and when all the packages
had been copied, the screen turned weird and the computer froze. I then
started over again, installing a base system with Yast1, and linux is now
working. I have downloaded the Detonator 3 drivers from Nvidia, and
installed them. But I cannot get either SaX or SaX2 running, and I have
tried with a lot of different command line arguments.
As far as I can see, the /var/log/XFree86.0.log does'nt reveal much except
for "Fatal server error: Caught signal 4. Server aborting" at the end of
the log. Some times it said "Caught signal 11" instead. There are a lot of
warnings complaining about fonts not being avalible, but I also had these
warnings on a different system which worked perfectly.
I have also tried creating the /etc/XF86Config with xf86config, but with the
same result.
So now I am getting desperate for this to work, and any help or suggestions
would be greatly apreciated!
Thanks a lot!
- Michael.

I wouldn't say that rc.local is the same as autoexec.bat. Actually
/etc/inittab is more like autoexec.bat. This is the first file which
'init' (the first process spawned after the kernel boots) looks at.
rc.local is the last script which is envoked when the machine boots up.
But, enough nitpicking. ;-)
You should be able to put regular command line programs at the end of
rc.local and they will work unless you are having some problem with the
command itself. For example, I put commands such as
modprobe sb
in my rc.local to load my sound module. What error is it giving you?

X windows is probably trying to start over and over again. When your
computer boots up and you get to the LILO prompt, type
linux 3
This should boot you into console mode so you can work on fixing X. Let me
know if that works before I elaborate on how to fix X.

Subject: Re: booting Linux on hdb
Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 18:39:20 -0400
By the way, Peter, I did get that WinModem fired up on Debian. The driver
didn't want to install with the particular kernal image I had. I don't
understand it. The package maintainer said it was looking for another
image of that version. I guess he was talking about me having to
re-compile another kernal to create the right imgage but the kernal I have
now isn't any different according to him. He said he could drop the
dependency but this method was "cleaner". He told me I should be able to
just force the install without any lose. I did and it did and it works.
So thats over with.
I had already tried what you suggested in LILO
image=/boot/<image-name>
root=/dev/hdb5
It told me something about the absence of or an improper boot signature.
Something to do with boot signature.
You said IF my BIOS was capable of booting the slave. How do I know if it
is or not?
About the documentation and how I didn't seem to get the answers I was
looking for. This is a case in point. If you are correct about the BIOS'
cabability as being a limiting factor to boot hdb, I never saw that
anywhere in the LILO documentation. I am not saying it isn't in there, I
just never saw it and I covered it pretty good. I would think I would have
seen it if it was in there. It talks about where to put LILO in dual disks
configurations but I didn't see anything about how to boot hdb with LILO.

It'll be slower than i386 optimization on an i686 (i.e. todays machines),
yes. The i686 does dynamic optimization, thus any prior
optimization for a i586 (whoch has peculiar characteristics) unbalances
its statistically based algorithms.

No, only three (well four if you include the swap partition):
/dev/hda1 (primary partition) /boot
/dev/hda5 (1st extended partition) /home
/dev/hda6 (swap)
/dev/hda7 (2nd extended partition) /
And it's my only hard drive :-D It's a 1GB disk in a poxy, old laptop=20
I'm trying to set up.

I noticed you didn't get any help on this subject. I may be able to shed some
light.
First as far as your "device busy". From your second post it seems like that
error message went away? But my initial thought was some sort of interrupt or
IO port conflict with another device. Of course, nevermind if you no longer
are having that problem.

Now you can try to force insmod to install despite the lack of dependency.
"insmod -f <filename>" should do it. If it is just a version mis-match
chances are you won't run into any problems.
Good luck,

Hello,
Did you try updating to the lastest available versions of mouseconfig and
Xconfigurator? There were problems with the initial 7.1 release of these
packages. Also you might try disabling gpm:
service gpm stop
to keep it from loading on boot:
chkconfig gpm off
or
ntsysv
and unselect gpm

Thanks Thomas, do you or anyone else out there know where I can
find crt1.o to install it? I've got the Slack 7.1 distro, if that
makes a difference.

Subject: pppd problem
Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 23:07:52 GMT
First I'd like to thank you for supplying the ESS linux modem drivers
on your site, I had a tough time locating them since it seems
ESS took them off of their FTP site.
I try to manually establish a PPP connection as it is explained in the
PPP HOWTO. I use minicom to dial my ISP, log in when prompted, then
exit
minicom while not resetting the modem. I then start the ppp daemon
with:
pppd -d -detach /dev/esscom 38400 38;
Some info scrolls across the screen, sent's and recv's that seem to
mirror each
other. (they both have the same content) eventually I get this:
Serial Line is looped back
sent[LCP TermReq id=0xb "Loopback detected"]
recv[LCP TermReq id=0xb "Loopback detected"]
sent[LCP TermAck id=0xb]
recv[LCP TermAck id=0xb]
Connection terminated
I'm not sure if it's relavant but looking at /var/log/messages
I see:
ESSCOM: @@@=> Queue number=34
repeated many times with differing queue numbers.
If you've encountered a similar problem or know where I may turn to
find an answer to the problem, please let me know, it would be much
appreciated.
