The Intel NIC works. The 3com driver had problems at one time, no idea
whether they are fixed or not (all are supported by Donald Becker,
however, so I assume he has been busy on the 3com driver problem and
SMP). I run an intel in my quad-P6, and have been busy copying 4 gigs
at a time with ftp and nfs, with no problems of any kind...
