My PPro 200 cost for boards and CPUs was $500 6 months ago, and is
now about $300.

What sucks is Intel's very high price on the PPro overdrive chips.
This machine could compete with most new stuff at 300MHz or better
and 1-2MB cache, which I think the overdrive chips have.

It would be cool if someone like AMD would make faster PPro
replacements.

I was running FreeBSD 3 last night, and I have to say it will be
interesting when they make the kernel fully reentrant. It felt
to me like the system was much smoother than Linux 2.0. By that I
mean no long pauses in the kernel like you get with Linux 2.0 and
overal smoother operation in X.

Note: I have not tried Linux 2.0.36 yet, I'm still at 35.

But under a load you can really tell how much better Linux 2.1 is
at doing SMP right now. Most of the time I run 2.1.124.

Still, I was wondering why BSD felt better in SMP than Linux 2.0.
Just curious since it probably doesn't matter with 2.0 coming up.

I just think it is so cool that BSD and Linux keep getting better
and faster as time goes on as opposed to more featureful and fatter
like certain other systems.
