Can't answer for the cpu things but from reading linux-smp for close to a
year, I'd say that Compaq/IBM/Dell SMP boxes have more of the way of
"features" such as funny IOAPIC's, odd onboard NIC's and other bits and
pieces than most home built machines were you know exactly what has gone
into the machine. (but than a I am hardware tinkerer"
If you want a Linux SMP server from a "Large Company" talk to people like
VA research, they even preinstall Linux for you. Not sure if it SMP ready
but you could ask :)
