Compaq's "genuine" parts are way overpriced. When I upgraded a Prolinea
[PPro200x2] I checked the parts list for the upgrade: it consisted
(IIRC) of just the processor and PPM. I ordered a bare CPU and the PPM
separately from two online vendors. Check the manuals or parts lists for
the part # of the PPM. I believe it was around $40.
You may have a minor problem with chip stepping, considering one
processor would be significantly older than the newer one.
Check it out with Intel first, though there should be no problem.
Unfortunately the computer was running Netware, so I can't vouch for its
SMP ability under Linux.
