Definitely the plan. However, the plan also involved "bootstrapping"
my way up since my modem is ISA and the PIIIDME has no ISA slots. "Not
a problem", I thought. "I'll just build an SMP version of my existing
kernel to get the new machine booted, and then FTP linux 2.4 across
the ethernet link."

Oh, joy. My other Ethernet card has an i82558 chip and seems fine.

Unrecognised almost surely suggests "not supported", though, doesn't it?

Worth a shot; thanks.

Well THAT sounds fixable, at the very least. Does linux 2.4 have a
more recent version? If so then I'll boot 2.4, get the Ethernet link
up, FTP the new kernel sources across ... err... err... Alan? How's
2.2.17 shaping up ;-3 ?
