Device not configured

Hello I was wondering if any one knew what this message is about. I am
currently running Redhat 5.0 with kernel 2.2.5.  I have configured the
kernel with parallel port support and have installed the latest ftape
modules.  Up to this point everything goes just fine.  When I go to run
the ftape-tools program (any feature) I get a device not configured
message.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
