Hi.

I'd like to know if there's any way to test a tape for bad blocks
or bad sectors or any other errors using Linux. I'm currently using RH5.1
with ftape 4.02 and ftape-tools. My drive is a Colorado T3000 connected
to the floppy controller.

I had a backup script running overnight last night, and woke up to
plenty of errors while it was running a verify using tar (tar dvf
/dev/nqft0). There were several read errors, and something like EOC
errors as well, and the verify aborted due to too many errors. I had made
a successful backup of a different filesystem the previous day using an
identical tape.

Also, the log I had made says it took around 3 hours to backup
around 500M. That seems awfully slow. It could have been due to a bad
tape. Is there any way to speed up the transfer rate to and from the tape?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
