The cheapest drives I've seen around that approach 5Gb are 4mm DAT drives,  I
got one of Onsale.com for about $120 (external) and use it exclusively with
Linux.  Capacity raw is about 2Gb, so you get more with compression,  speed is
quite good.  One thing to keep in mind is the cost of the tapes,  I can get 4mm
tapes at Office Depot for $4.99,  while tapes for Travan drives and QIC tapes
cat run into the low twenties.  And a tape drive is useless without tapes.
