Jozef,
            Sounds like a dirty mechanism, try cleaning the device, Exabyte
actually recomends the following strategy:
"run a cleaning tape though the drive 3 times in a row". Beyond that its time to
brake out the cleaning solution and VERY long qtips, although removal of the
case allows the use of regular cotton swaps. The afformentioned manual cleaning
is only needed if the tape case is hanging in the device, if the tape itself is
sticking off the reels inside it onto the actual tape head mechanism etc etc
then the cleaning tape should repair your issue
