Yea, I just spent about three days racking my brain with ftape and
kernel 2.2.5-15.  I gave up of ftape, way too complex for a stinking
tape driver, and tossed in a cheap scsi controller and tape drive -
real painless and took all of about 15 minutes.  Much faster backups
and more reliable.  BTW, you can pickup a Adaptech 2960 scsi
controller for about $60.
