Just as a note to those who might question software...
I messed with trying to get an EXB-8500 tape drive working with
LINUX for quite some time and finally got some diagnostic software
from EXABYTE which verified that I got a bad tape drive from a
fly-by-night bozo. It might be worth getting some such software and
verifying that the drive works before investing a lot more time in
this quest.
