Greg,

You've already proven that you can get around a kernel rebuild, so I'll
recommend the OnStream DI30.  It's an ATAPI/IDE drive that store 15GB
per tape native capacity.  It can be found at most resellers for $299 or
less.  Tapes are around $34 each.  You will need to update the kernel
tree with some new drivers that are available from LinuxTapeCert.org or
the OnStream website.

We consistantly see 1MB/sec and storage capacities of around 26GB using
BRU's software compression.
