I have just gone thru the same question. I've been reading lists like
this one, parport, etc. long enough to know that abandoning the
parallel port is a wise move.

I believe that the only "easy" backup route, especially for Linux
users, is a SCSI tape drive. Such 2 gB OR 4gB DAT drives--used or
discontinued of course--are sold on Net auction sites all the time for
$50 - $200. Of course a 20+ Gb unit in decent shape may go for $600 or
so. A SCSI-2 card will only be ca $20 more on the same sites.

This is as close to plug-and-play as we're going to get :-)

Naturally, there'll be plenty of contrary opinion.
