Yes, it is a VIA controller:

00:0c.1 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 1.1 Controller (rev 03)
00:0c.2 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 1.1 Controller (rev 03)
00:0c.3 USB Controller: ALi Corporation USB 2.0 Controller (rev 01)
00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 82)

I have a second USB2.0/2394 card in there with a different chipset that I'd love to try but this 6-in-1 device only has the connector that can be hooked up to the headers on the motherboard.

I will try the patch.

Are you using a USB controller by VIA Technologies? If you are, this patch may help a little:

Your log shows the card reader responding in an illegal fashion, which kills VIA controllers. That would explain why you have to reboot.
