For the moment I can't help. I'm not familiar with the ehci-hcd
source, and I don't have time to go through and figure out what's

(Can anyone recommend a brand of USB PCI add-on cards that uses VIA
chips? I'd be willing to buy one just for testing purposes...)

Over here in the Netherlands, most are VIA. Mine's a "Sweex 4xUSB2.0 2xFIREWIRE", Sweex being a Dutch brand. No idea if they sell globally. It comes with a nice firewire cable... They also have USB2.0 only cards
.
I was hoping that Dave would be able to post a patch for testing the
driver. Admittedly it's a long shot; probably the driver is fine
and there's something very strange going on with the hardvare.

In the past VIA has been very uncooperative about providing the information necessary to write software for their devices.

Yes. This controller is the only bit of VIA hardware I have -- I avoid those crapware peddlers like the plague. The sweex website promised me I was buying a NEC controller:

http://www.sweex.com/product.asp?pid=190

When it arrived it was a Rev. B with the VT6212L. "Ah", I thought, "it's a standard EHCI controller anyway, so who cares about docs"...

I only use the controller for infrequent backups to an external USB2 drive anyway, so for now it's okay. I'll hang on to it if for nothing else than debugging.

Rene.
