I don't have any bright ideas about where exactly the problem might be.  
A good start would be to set up a cleaner testing environment.

Disable the lircd service so that it doesn't get started automatically, 
and rename the /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/host/uhci-hcd.ko 
file so that it doesn't loaded automatically either.  Then reboot, and 
you'll have a pristine set up for testing the effects of ehci-hcd.
