Ok. verified this using cpuburn:

# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  102 MB in  3.03 seconds =  33.68 MB/sec

======= Starting cpuburn ===================

# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  132 MB in  3.00 seconds =  43.94 MB/sec
# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  156 MB in  3.02 seconds =  51.58 MB/sec
=======  Stopping cpuburn =================
# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   98 MB in  3.01 seconds =  32.53 MB/sec
