Helmut Toplitzer was the one with the disconnects, I'm just exeriencing that "async schedule" toggle and the resulting drop in IDE throughput:

BTW, I tried "hdparm -t /dev/hda" on my computer, in single-user mode with nothing else running besides the logger process. Entering the same command several times in a row gave values ranging from 23 MB/s to 54 MB/s. So it's not clear how reliable any single value is.
Then you have other problems. The value is supposed to be quite stable, given unchanging conditions, and for me it is. I get 50 MB/s always without "ehci-hcd loaded + drive switched on" and 42 MB/s always with.
