This is different to what I see...  when you load speedtch.o and mgmt it 
starts syncing.  If I wait my machine locks up as soon as the modem gets 
sync.

If I load pppd without syncing with the exchange (unplug from the wall) 
I can get to the 'connect to 0.38' bit then (of course) the ppp times out.

The only time I've seen the 'SETBACKEND' error, is when I've forgotten 
to 'modprobe pppoatm' before connecting.
