Hurrah - it works . . . . kinda.

I noticed http://www.nothing-on.tv in Tonys signature - had a look and
started from scratch with the patches he listed on that page (which were
entirely different to the patch that I had) - and after recompiling the
kernel and modules I at last had a pppoatm module to install. Thanks Tony -
your page is the best documentation I have found so far on Speedtouch
USB/PPPoATM configuration.

I still have a few problems:

a) sometimes I get this in my logs:

Mar 23 07:51:18 odin Speedmgmt[884]: Alcatel SpeedTouch USB Management
daemon started.
Mar 23 07:51:18 odin Speedmgmt[884]: (C) Alcatel 2001

Mar 23 07:54:43 odin kernel: usbdevfs: process 884 (mgmt) did not claim

and no matter what I try pppd fails with an LCP timeout message and does not
connect.
other times I get:

Mar 23 08:02:54 odin Speedmgmt[983]: Alcatel SpeedTouch USB Management
daemon started.
Mar 23 08:02:54 odin Speedmgmt[983]: (C) Alcatel 2001

Mar 23 08:03:55 odin pppd[985]: remote IP address yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

and pppd connects fine and it works (hurrah). I haven't yet managed to find
a pattern in rebooting the machine/unplugging and replugging in the ADSL
modem from the USB port/unplugging the modem from the wall - that causes it
to connect ok or not.

b) When pppd has connect ok I get a download speed of about 56K/sec which is
exactly what I see using the windows drivers, however I only get an upload
speed of 3.2K/sec as opposed to 35K/s I normally see under windows. I tested
this a couple of times with a 1Mb file uploading/downloading from a machine
at my ADSL service providers site (who I work for)

Has anyone got any ideas on either of these points ?

On the whole I'm really pleased that the drivers are 90% working - and
would like to thank Johan and and anyone else involved on the work they've
put in.

Cheers

Mat

ok,bye
