ok - I have spent half an hour trying to reproduce the crash that I was
seeing yeterday but have had no success. I have recompiled the kernel a few
times since I last saw it so I guess something has changed and made it "go
away" - I hate it when that happens !. I will fiddle some more to see if I
can work out the exact conditions under which it happens.

With the patch I have applied to the kernel
(http://www.sfgoth.com/~mitch/linux/atm/pppoatm/pppoatm-kernel-vs-2.4.0test2
) and PPP and PPPoATM enabled I don't get a pppoatm module - all I get is
ppp_generic.o What kernel version are you using and what patches did you
apply to it ?
