My advice is to try kernel 2.5.69 - I gave up with 2.4.20 and patches.
With 2.5.69 I still have to be careful - for example rmmod will crash
the system occasionally - but at least hotplugging seems to work most
of the time for my Smartcard reader and I can use lsscsi. Oh - and
I'm using a VIA chipset. :)
Unfortunately to upgrade from RH7.3 to a system that can run kernel
2.5.69 will be a lot of work. I'd say you'd be better off upgrading
to RH9 first. The trouble with that is that such a lot of things have
been changed...
