Then I guess I am confused as to why it works (sometimes) at all on my computer.

Why does CDCEther get loaded (yes, usbnet & acm also get loaded)?

And why does it work?

And why is there a Sharp Zaurus comment in the CDCEther.c source code?

I guess I made assumptions based on reading some code snippets (probably found via greps).

OK, with my Zaurus in the cradle, I just "rmmod CDCEther acm" and then synced my Zaurus with QTopia desktop. Worked fine! I'll blacklist CDCEther and see if it helps on subsequent re-insertions and reboots.

Thanks!

But if you blacklist it, it won't get used at all. CDCEther
*is* used by the Sharp Zaurus connection (isn't it?). The
problem it has seems to be with re-initialization.... If I
rmmod CDCEther, acm, & usbnet and then re-insert it...it works.
So something is not being re-initialized properly if the
drivers remain in memory. (At least on my system....)

CDCEther is not used by the Z. CDCEther is mainly used for usb
- -> ethernet products. The Z uses the usbnet (formerly called
usbdnet) because it is another computer, instead of just a
network interface. I don't remember where this is documented,
but I will look for it and get back to you on it. I have
CDCEther blacklistted, and it works fine. The net interface is
usb0 instead of eth0 so that is the main difference.
