Fascinating. I recompiled 2.6.8.1 with usb-storage as a module. I rebooted to the new kernel with the DVD writer plugged in. After waiting a few minutes, I decided to give it a go. /sbin/modprobe usb-storage.

The driver loads, no problem. Then I inserted a DVD+R that I had just finished writing in Windows 2000. A mount /dev/sr0 /cdrom finishes with no problem. No errors in the USB or SCSI logs. All of the files that I accessed were reading fine (some MP3s and a few video clips.)

I also tried a DVD+R that I wrote when I first obtained this drive. I was having consistant problems reading it. Now it reads fine when I connect it and load the drivers like you directed.

I am going to hammer at this drive and the usb-storage driver for a few days time to see if I am just having temporary luck with it. I will also try writing some stuff with it. So far, so good, I hope. If I see anything obviously wrong, I'll be sure to post my findings. Thanks!

That's great. A good experiment to try would be to see just how long the delay needs to be between plugging in the drive and loading the usb-storage module. Is 15 seconds enough? 5 seconds?

I've rebooted my system several times since you informed that I should wait. No problems! :) Time from device insertion to module insertion? I would wait the entire 30 seconds, which is about how long I waited (could have been longer.)

If I had some detailed specs on this device, I might be able to get an exact number. Unfortunately, I can't find an FCC ID number anywhere on it, or I'd hunt around on the FCC's website for information. Note to anybody else reading this: FCC ID numbers are _very_ useful when searching for hardware specifications.

I was able to write a CD-R in K3B from this drive, with no problem. Next comes a DVD+R, then a DVD+RW.

Another thing. Hotplug shouldn't interfere with this, as long as I blacklist the module name, right? What about ACPI? I disabled both in the time I've been troubleshooting.
