There have been some pretty extensive changes between 2.4 and 2.6; it's 
not at all surprising that some devices might not work with the new 
drivers.  Note that the problems Eero is having don't appear to involve 
usb-storage but rather the lower-level string descriptor routines.

At this point it's not possible to tell whether the error lies in the
device firmware, the device hardware, the computer hardware, or the
drivers.  About all we do know is that one of the kernels works okay on
Eero's system.  Since you haven't posted any more details of the verbose
debugging log, I can't tell what's happening with your system.

If they are, they appear to be pretty ineffective considering that the 
systems work with 2.4 (some of them) and 2.6.9-rc4-mm1 (some of them).

I still don't understand what's going on with that product ID.  It's 
exactly the same as Eero's FHD-Classic.  Is it possible that this is 
merely an enclosure with a USB interface, and it can hold any sort of IDE 
or ATAPI device?
