It sounds like you're talking about two separate problems. What happens if you plug the USB drive directly into the Zonet controller? It could be that the controller works fine but the external hub has issues. If the USB drive doesn't show up in /proc/bus/usb/devices when you plug it in, try rebuilding the kernel with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG turned on. If it does show up but it doesn't work properly, turn on CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG. In either case, post the dmesg log showing what happens when you plug in the drive.
