About like I saw (although the device I had could be mounted okay as
vfat).  I have trouble even imagining what sort of firmware peculiarities
could cause these behaviors.  It's as though they went out of their way to
make the device hard-to-use.

I don't think there's much point.  Any significant changes in the kernel 
since the 2.4 days are not likely to be undone, for any reason.  Nor is 
the kernel likely to be changed in any major respect to make it behave 
more like Windows XP.

Does the device work any better if you mount it read-only?  Obviously this 
would defeat the purpose of maintaining the files on the device.  But if 
it worked then at least we would have a small clue.
