You know, the error message you posted was kind of unusual, not the sort 
of thing one would expect to see from a totally-messed-up hardware 
interface.

Maybe you can get more useful information by using the usbmon interface.  
Instructions are in the kernel source file Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt.
