When I did this, it conflicted with my post-install/pre-remove
mounts of /proc/bus/usb in /etc/modules.conf (tied to 'usbcore').
Command line "umount /proc/bus/usb" was rude to me.

p.s. Everyone still using 'conf.modules', time to upgrade
    to the right modutils... Redhat 6.0/6.1 need updates,
    and likely many other distributions.
