You might be interested in seeing what irc has to offer.  I use
undernet, and it has the channels #nzlinux and #linux.  #linux I find
especially interesting and useful as they don't spoonfeed, they really
do encourage you to learn sound diagnostic procedures, and reporting
bugs in detail.

#nzlinux is friendlier but much quieter.

Other networks may be even better, theres a whole network devoted to
the open source community irc.openprojects.net, I don't know what its
like.

irc has been invaluable for that quick emergency question.

And of course theres newsgroups, which used to be good, but now theres
just too much spam and too many people asking questions and not enough
people answering them.
