The idea of a mailing list is that the conversation happens in the open in
front of everyone. also kind of defeats the purpose if you take a
conversation away, so that any good results/solutions dont make it to the
group.

No way. header munging BAD. As Yuri said, this has been covered before.
AFAIK, All list software will not replace a Reply-To: header, only add one.
so if the list adds a reply-to back to the list, anyone with their own
reply-to's get caught out, and replys go to them, not the list.

This is what the "Mail-Followup-To:" header is for folks, I highly suggest
folks find a client that supports it.
