I used slackware install disks, which have lots of drivers for esoteric
network cards.

I put the win 98 disk in the cdrom of the server and made it available
to the web browser.

I did a find on the win98 folder of the cd to get a list of the install
cab etc files.

I then wrote a short script to step through the list of files and wget
them from the server.

I then put that script and the list on a floppy and ran them on the
laptop. I mounted the vfat formatted hard drive in the laptop and then I
ran the script and it gave me a directory on the hard drive full of the
win98 cab files.

I then booted a dos boot floppy and ran c:\setup.exe

But as you say, you need a server - www or ftp. If your server is
running linux, thats no sweat. If you are running windows you can
install personal web server (on the win 98 and other install disks), and
when you have finished this operation REMOVE IT, also do not allow it
anywhere near the big bad net without a large prophylactic!!
